ELECTRIC VEHICLES

How is the driving range of electric vehicles measured?

Electric driving range is measured using a procedure called WLTP, which stands for Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure.

In practical terms, each electric vehicle model is tested in a controlled environment using equipment designed to simulate a variety of driving conditions. The test includes different driving phases, from urban roads to higher-speed journeys, to provide an official WLTP driving range figure. In real-world conditions, actual range may vary depending on factors such as driving style, speed, weather, terrain and vehicle load.

Good to know: WLTP is also used to measure fuel or energy consumption and CO₂ emissions across different vehicle powertrains, including petrol, diesel, hybrid and electric vehicles.
